چکیده

The present paper is concerned with a correlation between clinical parameters of multiple sclerosis and different agar gel electrophoretical patterns in CSF. The agar gel electrophoresis represents clearly the most sensitive method for the demonstration of oligoclonal bands in CSF.

Oligoclonal bands are found in electrophoretograms of serum of patients with multiple sclerosis.

A recent paper (1) describing oligoclonal banding in CSF indicates that it is necessary to electrophorese paired CSF and serum specimens simultaneously, to differentiate oligoclonal banding caused by intrathecal iinmunoglobulun production from increased permeability of the blood-CSF barrier. This dogma is not correct, as it has been shown by use of polyacrylaimde gel isoelectric focusing and Co...

Detection of oligoclonal free kappa chains in the absence of oligoclonal IgG in the CSF of patients with suspected multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND Oligoclonal free kappa bands are present as frequently as oligoclonal IgG bands in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with definite multiple sclerosis (MS) and can even occur in the absence of oligoclonal IgG. As such, they too are markers of an ongoing intrathecal immune process. OBJECTIVES To determine how frequently oligoclonal free kappa bands are detectable in the CSF...

Oligoclonal bands in cerebrospinal fluids: significance of corresponding bands in serum for diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Controversy exists regarding the definition of oligoclonal bands in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and whether CSF bands with corresponding bands in the serum should be disregarded in the interpretation. Much of this controversy results from not distinguishing between the sensitivities of different techniques used for these studies. Because the combination isoelectric focusing/silver staining is mor...
